Brewing Schild Brau

Filed under: Whats Brewing — Aaron @ 6:29 pm

Were back to brewing again, after all these crazy festivities. We can always use some more beer in the cellar. Things are starting to wind down in the salesroom… hmmm summer must be over!

We are still putting the finishing touches on our new warehouse. A little dry wall here, some spackle over there. Today I saw Teresa mudding drywall on a ladder while on her cell phone… what a multitasker!

Really though we can’t say just enough how great the warehouse is. Its like.. how did we ever get along without this?

Its been a good year. This month we surpassed the total barrelage that we did for all of last year… and its only October… I can’t wait to see the end of the year total!

Today, Tom found this great article written by a Grinnell College student about our Iowa Beerfestival. I really enjoyed reading it, it is very nicely written (and positive)! Much better than that wacky review we got from the DI about the Iowa City festival last year….

Cream Soda is back for a bit

Filed under: Whats Brewing, Fresh from the Tap — Aaron @ 1:13 pm

Today we bottled two pallets of Cream Soda. The idea is that it would be cool to do a soda sampler pack with Rootbeer, Black Cherry and Cream Soda. Each soda has a different color crown, making a pretty sharp looking six pack. The Cream soda will be for sale by the case also, although we have no plans to order any real six packs for it. We would have to order a three years supply of packaging as a minimum order, and we currently are not that dedicated to keeping it around. Also, it will not be on tap at the brewery, since we do not have enough tap faucets to serve three soda’s!

We have received many complaints about the discontinuing of Cream Soda, and we are listening to our fans! However we do lack the tank space to keep many soda’s around all year round… this is something we are hoping to remedy someday. Hopefully the big fans will be satisfied in being able to buy it by the case at the brewery… if you love it so much.. then you should want lots of it, right?

Speaking of whats on tap, we now have a special guest tap. Lost Duck Brewing of Fort Madison, Iowa dropped off a five gallon keg each of their Porter and CanvasBack Lager. If you remember, the lager was voted best of show at the Iowa Beer festival back in September. Its a nice change of pace having someone elses beer on tap… so come down and check it out before we drink it all!

Brewing Schocolade Bock

Filed under: Whats Brewing — Aaron @ 8:46 pm

Good news, we are brewing Schokolade Bock today. Dont get too excited though, because it will not be out on tap for over a month, as we have to lager it for 5 weeks before we can release it.

Today was pretty good brewing weather, nice and cool. I hope all that hot weather is behind us for good!

The bock ran off nicely, I think our new recipe is working pretty well. We are making it in smaller batches, so it does not stress the limit of our mash tun so much. Today our final yield was just a hair over 16 bbls (we normally do 20bbl batches). Back in the old days, we made 20bbls, but sometimes it took all day, and night, and maybe some of the next day! The lauter was so slow! Ahh the good old days… i’m glad they are just memories!

Tommorrow I’m going to the Quad City Brew Ha HA Beer festival, and Chris will be at the Tall Grass Praire beer festival in Waterloo. I was planning on doing the Mt Horeb beer festival, but I had to cancel that at the last minute. We were just stretching ourselves too far. We don’t have enough tap boxes, vans, and people to do this many things at once. Well, we could, but noone would be having any fun :( Buckley was going to be doing the Quad City festival all by his lonesome, something he has never done before… Beer festivals can be exhausting when your the only one there, so I decided to go with him. To make it more fun, we are bringing more beers than we said we would bring. Besides Schild Brau, John’s White Ale, and Wheat, we are also bringing Warsh Pale Ale and Dopplebock! Maybe we will be the hit of the party!?

This also leaves Chris the use of a tap box for his festival… last year he used picknic pumps for all of his beers and it was a messy, foamy affair! I have some more info on the Tall Grass Praire Brewfest. It is sponsored by the Grout Museum District in Waterloo, and it starts at 5pm to 9pm, in Soldiers and Sailors Park in downtown Waterloo. Last year Chris reported we were on the only real brewery there. Hopefully this year Chris will have company from the new brewpub up there, Beck’s Sports Bar and Grill.

I have more good news! Today we accepted an offer for a new kitten for our brewery! Matt Franklin was the winner of best of show at last years THIRSTY Classic and he also raises Maine Coons. One look at these little dears, and you will see how we could not refuse! http://www.geocities.com/wildpride/kittens.html

Matt did a great job describing why these guys are so special:

I was sad to hear about your loss of Millie. My wife breeds Maine Coon cats which are large beautiful cats. The Maine Coon is the only native North American longhaired domestic cat. The Maine Coon breed is thought to have originated in Maine, where they developed into a sturdy cat ideally suited for harsh winters. The Maine Coon is known for it’s loving nature, kind disposition and great intelligence. They are often referred to as the “Gentle Giant”, and posses dog-like qualities. Maine Coons are great with children and dogs, as well as other feline friends. They were brought the Iowa as mousers and referred to as the Iowa Barn Cat many years ago. I think one would make a great addition to your brewery. My wife and I would like to donate one of our kittens to become the new Millstream Brewery cat.

Furthermore the kitten will be ready to apopt on around the time of the next THIRSTY Classic (in early November!).. how convenient! We really appreciate this gesture from Matt and his wife.. thank you so much! It has been really quiet and uneventful without good old Millie around… though i’m sure the mice are just loving their reprieve!

Oktoberfest is released!

Filed under: Aaron, Whats Brewing — Aaron @ 7:58 am

Yesterday we put the Oktoberfest on tap at the brewery. We bottled it earlier in the week, so you should be able to find it at your local stores this weekend. Its a very good batch, we could not be happier with it!

We are getting prepared today for Labor Day weekend, and the Iowa Festival of Beers. I really hope that the high gas prices don’t keep people away! In consideration of this (and other reasons) we have lowered the Admission price to 10$ for all you can drink… hey what a deal! Also I have word that Ed Fallon, the democratic gubernatorial nominee for governer, will be attending, and perhaps even playing in the early afternoon.

The Seasonal Crunch

Filed under: Aaron, Whats Brewing — Aaron @ 3:54 pm

We just completed two days of bottling. Yesterday was all soda, Rootbeer and Black Cherry. Today we bottled Schild Brau, Warsh Pail (last of the season) and Colony Oatmeal Stout (first for the season). We would have liked to release our Oktoberfest today, but we had some bottlenecks in the cellar, so we put that off until next week. We were almost completely out of Stout, and there are these certain customers who get quite cranky when the stout runs dry in the summer… you know who you are! So we bottled stout just for you guys!

We seem to have more Warsh Pail Ale left than we intended. This always creates a problem for us since the Warsh is in the same six pack carrier (with the same UPC code) as all of our other seasonals. When the Oktoberfest comes out, you may see our Pail ale dissappear from your local store.. but don’t despair, there will still be Warsh here at the brewery for quite some time!

Actually we often have more kegs than bottles on our seasonals. So if you really want a beer, you can always come out and get a growler even after we move onto the next season.

Our warehouse is nearly done! That is good because the busiest time of the year is nearly upon us. Teresa and Chris have already filled it up full of stuff. All thats left to do is to install the walk in cooler, and get our plumber to finish the electrical and wiring.

I know it looks huge, but really is not. Buckley and I were reminded of this when we payed homage to the old Dubuque Star Brewery on the way back from Madison. The building is located right down by the river, and is pretty damn cool looking. They made beer there from 1899 to 1998, which if you ask me, is pretty damn long time. Chris worked there for several years, and if you ever want to hear some good stories, he has a quite few about the ‘character’ of that old brewery.

September is going to be a busy month for us. Here is the short list of Festivals.
September 3rd Festival of Iowa Beers in Amana
September 10 Field to Family Dinner in conjuction with Devotay
Sept 17th Quad Cities Brew Haha and The Mt Horeb beer festival in Wisconsin
Sept 24th The Iowa City Beer Festival
Oct 1st Oktoberfest here in Amana (oh yeah!)

Oh, one more thing. Not only do we have festivals, but we have two Homebrew competitions coming up. The first is one done during the Saturday of Oktoberfest. The brewmasters judge the beer and hand out awards for the best brews during the festivities. We will be accepting entries at the brewery from 9-5pm from sept 27th until sept 30th and then from 9am till noon on Saturday Oct 1st. We need 24 oz of your beer, in anyway you deem fit to enter it. The number of awards will depend on the number of entries. Last year we gave out 6 awards, three for lagers, and three for ales.

And then we have the Thirsty Classic homebrew competition held here at the brewery on November 5th. This is the real deal, a BJCP sanctioned event, organized and run by Iowa city area hombrewers (THIRSTY). You can find out more details on their website http://www.thirstyhomebrew.org/
