Millstream Wins at the NABA
Good News, we took a Gold and Silver medal at the North American Beer Awards! This competition is held at the Mountain Brewers Fest in Idaho Falls every June. There are many different beer competitions, but we now only enter the three most professionally well run. These would be the NABA, the GABF (held in the fall) and the World Beer Cup (which is only held every two years).
I personally like the NABA because it is held in June, which is nice for seasonals that are out of season in the fall or winter. The North American Beer Awards are growing pretty quickly. The full results are here.

Great to see that the brewery continues to win medals in these competitions. Keep up the good work.
Not sure if you can answer this, but does Bud really sell to the general public the Spiced Wheat beer that took gold? I have seen them win medals in styles that I had no idea they made a beer for. If not, I wonder if they should not be allowed to enter these beers if they don’t sell them. But that is just my opinion.

I think they have to sell it to enter a competition. All I have seen is a press release myself. I know last year their medal winning Michelob Marzen was only availabe as part of a 12 pack sampler pack. I never did get to try it, since I didn’t really want the other three beers in the package.

Congratulations! Again the quality of your beers prevail.
Job well done! It has to be a great feeling when you get the results and see that something you pour your heart and life into is recognized by others as something that is truley outstanding. You must be overjoyed.
Thanks for brewing you beers.

Buckley says he tried a sample of the Spring Heat Spiced Wheat that a distributor had at John’s Grocery. However, John’s Grocery isn’t selling it and he has not seen it for sale anywhere.
Undoubtedly, AB could make the best Wit beer in the world, they certainly have the resources. However they will never be able to capture the localness and personal touch of Craft beer no matter how many medals they garner in our competitions. That can’t be formulated in a lab!
Thanks for the congrats dooner. Yes, we are quite proud of our beers, and we are looking forward to brewing up lots more beer this summer, this season is just starting!

Indeed–congratualations on the latest awards. It’s always a good sign, when (1) the brewery gets multiple awards and (2) from multiple sources. I’m surprised the pilsner has never received some hardware, although I imagine that is a very competitive category.
In an unrelated story, I had another great “oh, they have Millstream on tap here” moment. I was at a Waterloo Bucks baseball game on June 10–not only was Millstream on tap, but they had two styles (Schild Brau and Belgian White). And they had a happy hour, during which all beers (not just Swill and Swill Light) were one dollar. Ah, the joy of enjoying a one-dollar good beer at the ballpark. (Hey Cedar Rapids Kernels, are you paying attention?).

Yes your right.. if you look at the awards over the years, the best breweries are very consistent. There are some flukes.. for example Angelica Brewpub in Madison got 6 GABF medals one year, none the next year, and then closed its doors. I’d rather be something more steady than that!
I don’t enter the Pilsner and some of our other beers, since they are technically out of style and really don’t have a chance. In the case of the German Pilsner, our water in Amana is really too hard to make a sylistically ‘proper’ Pilsener.. and i’m not about to start fiddling with my water just to make the GABF happy (though some breweries certainly do use R.O. water with great success).
Its great to hear about your experience at the Bucks. We have had a great time working with them. We are also on tap at the Iowa Cubs in Des Moines. Some day we will be invited back to the Kernals new stadium… just keep hollering at them!
