Shell Shocked

We’re brewing stout today, a very slow brew, so I have a little time to relate some interesting, and strange, happenings here.

First off, the Amana Society is repairing their hydro-electric dam thanks to a state grant. This entailed opening the dam and draining the canal. Naturally, I got curious with visions of fish madly flopping around in the mud, and went over to take a look. There weren’t many fish but there were some rather odd looking rocks. Upon closer examination they turned out to be very large clams. I have never seen fresh water clams that big before. There are a multitude of them casually lounging about the now small stream, some as much as eight inches across. Water will continue to trickle through there so I’m sure they’ll be alright until the dam is fixed. I did pick through the higher rocks and rescue a few of the stranded crustaceans. Check out the pictures.

As I mentioned, strange things are happening in the brewery, as well. Those annoying beetles are still as thick as ever but the last time I went to unleash my trusty, although excessive, shop vac it wouldn’t run. I opened it up to find all the wires chewed up. I went to get a can of bug spray and couldn’t find any. I’ve had to go around scooping them up with a dust pan and chucking them outside. Those little suckers bite, too!

Another odd thing, one of our saleroom people is missing. She’s a mature lady, not too fast on her feet. I came in this morning to find the doors unlocked, the music still playing, all the lights on and her stuff still sitting behind the counter. I called her husband; he hadn’t seen her and was quite concerned. She probably just went for a walk and really lost track of time. Perhaps a tourist grabbed her as a souvenir. They’ll nab anything not nailed down, you know. One time, one of the old buildings disappeared. They found it quickly enough, heading south on I380 on the back of some guy’s flat-bed. Well, if anyone finds her, please return her to us. Thanks.

Not so slow!

Well I just had a speedy stout runoff of three and half hours.. that must be a record!

Of course, yesterday I had a very slow Schild Brau runoff, because I overtightened the grain bed, so I guess i’m even.

Here are some pictures of Chris’s Clams. He seemed very worried about them. I reassured them that they have been around for a long time and would be ok (though I bet the river otters already ate them for lunch).

I find the restoration of this power plant really exciting. I hope we can find out how much power it produces, and maybe make some sort of deal with the power company. I would love to be a hydro-electrically powered brewery… a renewable resource!
