millstream-ator

Filed under: Uncategorized — Aaron @ 2:26 am

I have been thinking alot about doing a dopplebock for our 20th anniversary beer. I think I could a 18 degree plato bock, and arrest the fermentation before it violates the 6.25% law. It will be a heavy, sweet caramelly beer, good for sipping with intense foods, such as cheeses. We could hand bottle it into half liter (16.9 oz) grolsch type flip top bottles. Yea, it will be some work, but already Dan and Gerbo have volunteered to help out with the bottling. All we need now is a name, and a label. Traditionally, double bocks have the suffix of -ator in Germany, such as Salvator, Celebrator, and Optimator. Millstream-ator does not come cleanly off the tounge though, and neither does Iowator. I’m sure i’ll think of something… Please leave some suggestions!

Its too bad about the dumb 6.25% law. It would be great to do a 20 degree plato bock.. one degree plato for every year, and keep doing it every year until wort gets so strong that the yeast refuse to ferment it. :)

Its going to be a busy week. Tom and Teresa are on vacation, so I need to take care of kegs and local accounts as well as get ready to brew the first batch of Oktoberfest so it will be ready for release on September 15th.

Word just got in that our Warsh Pail Ale labels will be here Tuesday, August 10th. Better late than never. We will be bottling it that day. Look for it in Iowa City as soon as the following weekend. Of course, you could come straight out to the brewery if you really can’t wait any longer! We will not be making a third batch of this beer, because its too close to Oktoberfest season. So be sure to get your case before the middle of September!

    How about the Amanator?

I thought of that. It has a nice ring too. But the Amana Society guards the Amana name very closely. Some years ago there was even a brewery who made Amana Beer, and the society put a stop to that (so they changed the name to Gemeide Brau)! I would have to seek approval from the society, and probably pay them some huge fee for the privilege.

I’ll have Teresa look into that though, it would be a nice name.

Maybe Rejuvenator? I just thought of that. Has a nice ring to it. Sort of goes with how we rejuvenated this old brewery.

Well, if you wanted to be dishonest about it, you could say it was in homage to Aman from the Tolkien/Lord of the Rings universe, the blessed realm that is home to the Valar and Maiar (basically, angelic figures) *wink*

The Silmarillion is one of my all-time favorite books. Is something wrong with me? :D

Thanks for the ideas on beer names. I like Iowator, though litebeerhator made me chuckle! Chris has formulated his own recipe for our 20th anniversary ale, and its more along the lines of a stout. We are going to make two 5 gallon test batches using Gerbo’s (my brewing assistant) homebrew system. I would use my own system, but its been collecting dust ever since I started brewing professionally. Now that Chris has a welder, we have been talking of making a ‘pilot brew’ system, so we can make small batches of all the funky beers we think of.

Oh, and I have read the Silmarillion several times, but i’m sure that wouldn’t fool the Amana Society.
